Kurt Lembo named 2024 CCF QLD Engineer of the Year

Kurt Lembo’s journey as an engineer has always been marked by dedication, innovation, and a deep sense of responsibility.

In 2024, all these qualities culminated in a momentous achievement: being awarded the prestigious Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) Queensland ‘Engineer of the Year’ Award.

Leading complex traffic engineering operations

Kurt’s story is one of determination and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

As a Senior Project Engineer with Seymour Whyte, he plays a pivotal role in managing some of the most complex traffic staging operations for our brownfield, high-speed, high-volume motorway projects.

Every day, up to 100,000 vehicles pass through his section of roadworks on the Brisbane to Gold Coast corridor – a critical artery for the South East Queensland region.

Mastering the challenges of traffic engineering

Ensuring that traffic flows smoothly, even amid the ongoings of motorway roadworks and construction, is a challenge that Kurt meets head-on.

Traffic engineering is often seen as one of the more daunting aspects of civil engineering as it demands precision, foresight, and an acute understanding of how even small changes can ripple through the community, and overall traffic network.

For Kurt, these challenges are opportunities to showcase his expertise. His work minimises disruptions for commuters and upholds the safety and efficiency of the motorway system.

Mentorship and leadership: shaping the next generation

Beyond his technical achievements, Kurt is known for his leadership and his passion for mentoring the next generation of engineers – offering invaluable insights and support to junior engineers who are beginning their careers.

His influence has helped shape a new wave of talent at Seymour Whyte, ensuring that his knowledge and values are passed on to those who will carry the industry forward.

Social responsibility

Kurt’s holistic approach to engineering extends far beyond the worksite. He’s involved in community outreach helping young people gain the skills and confidence they need to find employment and contribute positively to their communities.

It’s work that aligns perfectly with his broader philosophy that engineering is also about building lives.

Sustainability is another area where Kurt shines, constantly looking for innovative ways to reduce waste and repurpose materials. One of his initiatives — using redundant construction materials for temporary sign fixing — also demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship. It’s a small, and yet powerful example of how creative thinking can lead to significant benefits.

Championing safety in engineering

Safety, too, is a cornerstone of Kurt’s approach. His proactive initiatives, from advocating for Road Safety Week to meticulously planning on-site vehicle movements, and on-road traffic staging to aid with brownfield construction and roadworks, have significantly improved safety standards on his projects. For Kurt, the well-being of workers and the public is paramount, and his efforts in this area have made a tangible difference.

The Varsity Lakes to Burleigh Upgrade: a landmark project

One of Kurt’s most notable projects was the nationally acclaimed Varsity Lakes to Burleigh (VL2B) upgrade, which won the 2023 Civil Contractors Federation’s National Earth Award for engineering excellence.

His technical prowess for the complex traffic management and staging of the Gold Coast’s first diverging diamond interchange was instrumental in the project’s success, further cementing his reputation as a leader who can deliver outstanding results that benefit all project stakeholders.

Recognition and gratitude

As he stood on the stage to accept the ‘Engineer of the Year’ Award, Kurt’s thoughts likely turned to all the people who have supported him along the way — his family, colleagues, mentors, and the young engineers he now mentors himself.

The accolade is a recognition of his individual achievements, and a celebration of the values he embodies: innovation, safety, sustainability, and a commitment to making a positive impact.

Will MacDonald, Seymour Whyte’s General Manager Northern and Western Regions, captured the sentiment perfectly:

“Kurt’s holistic approach to engineering and leadership made him our standout nominee for the CCF’s 2024 Engineer of the Year Award.”

“Kurt’s recognition is a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence and his ability to seamlessly integrate technical expertise with compassionate leadership.”

“We look forward to Kurt’s continued contributions as he remains a driving force for positive change in the industry, inspiring both his peers and the future leaders he mentors.”

As Kurt continues to advance in his career, there’s no doubt that he will remain a beacon of excellence in the engineering world, guiding the industry towards a brighter, more sustainable future.

Congratulations, Kurt, on a job well done.
