M5 Westbound Upgrade in the spotlight

The $380 million M5 Westbound Upgrade has been highlighted at a recent ministerial media event, marking an important public milestone for the project and the work being delivered by Seymour Whyte in partnership with Transport for NSW.

Held on 8 May, the event brought together NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison, Federal Member for Hughes David Moncrieff, Member for Liverpool Charishma Kaliyanda, project stakeholders and mainstream media to highlight the significance of the upgrade for South West Sydney communities.

The major upgrade will improve safety and traffic flow on one of Sydney’s busiest motorway corridors by removing the high-risk weaving section between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway.

Anyone who drives the M5 near Moorebank knows how challenging this stretch can be, particularly during afternoon peak periods, where vehicles entering westbound from Moorebank Avenue merge with traffic exiting at the Hume Highway. The result is congestion, sudden braking, last-minute lane changes and increased safety risks.

With more than 2,500 trucks using the corridor each day from the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Precinct – and freight volumes expected to grow – the upgrade will deliver critical long-term improvements for motorists, freight operators and the wider community.

The project includes:

• a new 300-metre-long, three-lane bridge over the Georges River, Southern Sydney Freight Line, and T2 and T5 railway lines
• removal of the existing high-risk weaving section
• additional lanes to improve traffic flow and reduce merging conflicts
• a new shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.

Once complete, the project will provide a smoother, safer journey for motorists travelling through South West Sydney, with improved connections between the M5 Motorway, Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway.

The project is expected to be completed in 2029.
