About
The M5 Motorway currently operates as the key through-traffic arterial connection for south-west Sydney. It is used by local and regional motorists, freight carriers and businesses, and supports economic and residential growth in the Western Sydney region. It is also expected that the M5 Motorway will serve as a major transit link connecting south-west Sydney with the future Western Sydney International Airport and Western Sydney Parklands.
The upgrade will remove a traffic weave between vehicles entering the M5 from Moorebank Avenue and those alighting from the M5 Motorway onto the Hume Highway. This project will improve network reliability, sustain ongoing growth, reduce congestion and improve access to the Liverpool CBD. It will also deliver pedestrian and cyclist links across the Georges River and enhance freight connectivity between the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal and the state road network.
Scope of work
The upgrade includes:
- a new three-lane bridge over the Georges River and the Southern Sydney Freight Line, T2 and T5 railway lines, improving the connections between the M5 Motorway, Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway
- removal of the weave on the M5 Motorway between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway to improve safety and traffic flow for road users entering and exiting the M5 Motorway
- provision of extra lanes that will remove the need for around 2600 vehicles per day to weave between lanes and other road users when navigating the entry and exit points at the Hume Highway and Moorebank Avenue
- enhancing the existing freight access to and from the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal
- provision of a new pathway between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway for cyclists and pedestrians.
