Melbourne Airport T4 Express Link – Stage 1

About

Seymour Whyte has been engaged as principal contractor to deliver the design and construction of Melbourne Airport’s Terminal 4 (T4) Express Link (Stage 1). The Express Link is a new elevated road connection from the Tullamarine Freeway to the Terminal 4 ground transport hub.

The scope includes:

  • 200m long part at-grade and part-elevated 9 span road consisting of 5 spans concrete super T’s and 4 spans of steel box girders
  • earthworks, pavements, drainage
  • pier protection barriers
  • reinforced earth walls
  • concrete piles, abutments, columns, crossheads, beams
  • new services such as CCTV, lighting, electrical and communications

Seymour Whyte in collaboration with our design partners and client, optimised the design and construction methods to avoid costly relocation of major services such as the high voltage power and the main water main to the terminal building.

We also focused our efforts to minimise the Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure through innovative design and construction solutions including substituting deep pad footings for a piles and pile cap design to reduce excavation depth to minimise excavation volume.

This elevated express link from Tullamarine Freeway directly the T4 will help:

  • the local transport network meet the airport’s capacity growth requirements
  • address growing traffic congestion
  • create a more streamlined exit from the freeway catering mostly to T4 domestic travellers.

Construction will start post-COVID.
