Celebrating Peter ‘PJ’ Johnston: A lasting legacy in quality and innovation
After more than 17 years with Seymour Whyte, National Quality Manager Peter “PJ” Johnston has retired, closing a remarkable chapter in the company’s growth.
PJ joined Seymour Whyte in 2008, when the business employed around 85 people and generated approximately $80 million in annual turnover. Over his tenure, he has seen the company grow into a national contractor with more than 900 employees and annual revenue approaching $1 billion.
Throughout this transformation, PJ played a pivotal role in shaping how quality is structured, governed and embedded across the organisation, supporting its evolution in scale, capability and geographic reach.
A defining achievement of PJ’s career was the development of SWIFT (Seymour Whyte Integrated Functions Terminal), an innovative platform that integrates quality processes, work lot management and project controls. His forward-thinking approach ensured the system could scale alongside the business, supporting increasingly complex infrastructure delivery.
Under his leadership, Seymour Whyte’s quality function matured in step with its expanding operations, contributing to consistent project performance and strong governance across the portfolio.
PJ’s contribution extends beyond systems and processes. His professionalism, technical expertise and steady leadership have influenced teams across the business, leaving a legacy that will continue to shape how projects are delivered.
In his farewell remarks, PJ characteristically summed up the transition into retirement with humour.
“My site inspections will now be replaced with sightseeing, quality control with cruise control, and gap analysis with measuring the gap between my boat and the jetty.”
While PJ may be trading audits for anchors, his influence remains firmly embedded in Seymour Whyte’s systems, processes, and ways of working.
As he steps into retirement, PJ leaves behind a strong foundation built on quality, discipline and continuous improvement.
