About

Seymour Whyte was awarded this lump sum contract to construct a major runway extension at the Rockhampton Airport in North Queensland. This critical airside upgrade project will be completed while civil and Defence airport operations remain operational at all times. The project includes:

  • Stripping of topsoil
  • Excavation of materials
  • Installation and compaction of base and subbase
  • Prime coat to asphaltic pavement
  • Supply and laying of asphaltic concrete pavement over new apron and taxiway
  • Drainage works
  • Dewatering for pavement construction
  • Line marking
  • Taxiway lighting
  • Relocation of wind sock
  • Apron lighting
  • Landscaping

As works involved extending the end of the main live runway of the airport, this required total compliance with the requirements for air traffic entering and exiting the airport, as to not disrupt normal operations or create safety hazards for project workers, airport staff and the general public. To work effectively around these operational constraints, Seymour Whyte worked collaboratively with the airport staff to ensure smooth, timely work area transitions and absolute safety for all.

Due to careful planning, cooperation, and productive, timely liaison with the Airport authority, the works proceeded efficiently and smoothly . The project was successfully completed within budget one month ahead of schedule.

“In order to optimise the use of the runway extension the first section was required to be completed within a very short time frame. Seymour Whyte completed this part of the project within budget and on time, accomplishing the tasks in such a professional manner that the various project time constraints were not made evident.”
