About

The Western Distributor Smart Motorway project installed smart technology and digital signage on the Western Distributor between Anzac Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, to improve traffic flow, travel time and safety for road users. Around 130,000 vehicles use the Western Distributor each day, making it Sydney’s busiest transport corridor.

A smart motorway uses real-time information, communication, and traffic control systems to improve traffic flow. Variable electronic roads signs and messages communicate to drivers how to best travel along the motorway for a safer, more consistent journey. With the improved signage and wayfinding, the risk of crashes is reduced with more efficient incident response.

The fabrication steel gantries used to hold new signage and smart motorway technology was carried out at an offsite facility in Newcastle. Each element of the gantries were moved to the Western Sydney yard for assembly and pre-wiring before being transported onto the Western Distributor and installed on site.

Installation of the gantries involves the closure of the Western Distributor with traffic and buses detoured to enable the large cranes to set up and install gantries overnight and reopen the road to users for the busy morning peak. To connect these 21 gantries, electric cables and roadside cabinets were installed in the surrounding streets and roads through a network of above ground cable trays, and underground pits and conduits.

Key challenges

Key challenges included navigating busy roads with a complex traffic network and operating adjacent to live traffic. The work also involves working at heights, crane lifts, restricted site access and space, and working around utility services and live electrical systems.

Additionally, retrofitting existing structures, managing multiple interfacing projects, completing night shifts, with potential impact on numerous business and residential stakeholders, added further complexity. Effective planning and communication between gantry, overhead, and underground teams was essential to address these challenges.
